A Marriage Certificate is an instrument which is used to prove the fact that two individuals have been married successfully. Marriage Acts-
There are two marriage Act, under which marriages could be registered in India-
Hindu marriage act 1955- marriage between two individuals could be registered under this Act if both parties to the marriage are Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, or Buddhists or have been converted.
Special Marriage Act- A marriage could be registered under this Act where parties to the marriage belong to any religion or different religions or castes. Generally those couples apply for registration under this Act who have inter-caste or inter-religious marriages or those Indian nationals who have been living abroad.
Procedures to Apply for a Marriage Certificate?
If the marriage is to be registered under the Hindu Act, one could directly apply to the office of the Sub-divisional Magistrate on a particular working day under whose jurisdiction either the wife or the husband resides.
The application form is required to be duly filled and signed by both parties to the marriage.
On the date the application form is submitted, document verification would be carried out and a particular date would be fixed for the appointment of the couple, which will then be communicated to the parties for registration of their marriage.
On such a particular day as provided, the parties to the marriage are to appear along with the Gazette Officer (one who was present during their marriage) in the presence of the ADM. The marriage certificate will then be issued on that particular day after confirming the facts as per the procedure.
Documents needed for Marriage Certificate/Registration-
The application is required to be filled and shall be duly signed by both husband and wife.
Address proof of the parties- Driving license/Voter Id/ Passport/Ration Card.
Birth Certificates of the parties to the marriage.
Passport size photos (2) and marriage photographs (1).

Marriage Affidavits to be submitted separately.

Fill up the details for the spouse and the option of ‘Registration of Marriage Certificate’ is required to be selected
The marriage certificate form is required to be filled up and the applicant would have to choose the ‘date of appointment.’

A temporary number will be allotted which would be printed on the acknowledgement slip.

For appointments
For a marriage registered under the Special Marriage Act 1954, one may get an appointment within a period of sixty days, however if the marriage has been registered under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, one may get the appointment within fifteen days.
Who Can be a Witness?
A person who has attended the couple’s wedding could be considered a witness and should have a Residence proof as well as Pan card.

Fees Charged-
For a marriage registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, the fee charged is ₹100.
For a marriage registered under the Special Marriage Act, the fee charged is ₹150.
